The motorcycle and moped theory test has the same two parts as the car test, and you must pass both on the same day.
| Part | What you do | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice | 50 questions about riding and road rules | 57 minutes | 43 out of 50 |
| Hazard perception | 14 clips with 15 developing hazards | About 20 minutes | 44 out of 75 |
Changing on 29 October 2026. If your test is before 29 October 2026, some questions come as a case study: a short story with 5 questions based on it. If your test is on or after 29 October 2026, the case study is replaced by 3 questions about a short, silent video of a normal riding situation. You can watch the video as many times as you like during the test.
Everything else stays the same: 50 questions, 57 minutes, 43 to pass, and you can flag questions and change answers at any point. Read the official wording on GOV.UK or our theory test changes 2026 guide.
Who takes the motorcycle theory test?
You need to pass it before you can take your practical riding tests. You can take the theory test from 16 for a moped (up to 50cc) or from 17 for a motorcycle. You need a provisional licence to book, and the test costs £23. When you're ready, book your theory test on GOV.UK.
Practise the 14 topics from a rider's point of view
The motorcycle test uses the same 14 topics as the car test, adapted for riding. Practise each one with instant feedback:
- Alertness – rear observation, the lifesaver glance and riding when tired
- Attitude – positioning, overtaking and sharing the road
- Safety and your vehicle – helmets, protective clothing, chain and tyre checks
- Safety margins – stopping distances, wet roads and ice
- Hazard awareness – reading the road ahead on two wheels
- Vulnerable road users – pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
- Other types of vehicle – lorries, buses and their blind spots
- Vehicle handling – braking, cornering and riding in wind and rain
- Motorway rules – joining, lanes and breakdowns on a motorway
- Rules of the road – junctions, speed limits and filtering
- Road and traffic signs – signs, road markings and signals
- Essential documents – licences, insurance and MOT
- Incidents, accidents and emergencies – first aid, CPR and what to do at a crash
- Vehicle loading – luggage, passengers and towing on a bike
Free motorcycle mock tests
Our mock motorcycle theory test draws 50 questions from all 14 topics, with a 57-minute timer and a pass mark of 43. For fixed sets you can retake and compare, try mock test 1, mock test 2 or mock test 3.
Motorcycle hazard perception test
Riders take the same hazard perception test as car drivers: 14 clips, 15 developing hazards, up to 5 points each and 44 out of 75 to pass. Our free hazard perception test uses original animated clips with the real scoring rules, and our hazard perception tips explain when to click.
New CPR and defibrillator questions
From 2026, motorcycle theory tests include new questions on CPR and, for the first time, on defibrillators (AEDs). Practise them in Incidents, accidents and emergencies.
Tips for motorbike theory test practice
- Read The Highway Code, especially the rules for motorcyclists, and look up any rule you get wrong.
- Practise two or three topics a day, then take a timed mock once a week.
- Spend extra time on safety margins and vulnerable road users, as they test how you judge risk on two wheels.
- Mix hazard perception clips into every session, because you have to pass both parts on the same day.
