What is the Driver CPC case studies test?

The case studies test is part 2 of the Driver CPC initial qualification for lorry, bus and coach drivers, often called module 2. Each case study is a short story based on a situation you're likely to come across in your working life, followed by multiple-choice questions about it.

How our CPC case study practice works

Our CPC case study mock test copies the real format: 7 original case studies, 50 questions, a 75-minute timer and a pass mark of 40. The scenario stays on screen while you answer (in a panel you can open on mobile), and you can flag questions and go back. Want to warm up first? Start with case study 1 and work through one scenario at a time.

How to answer case study questions

  1. Read the whole story first. Note the vehicle, the load or passengers, the time of day and the weather.
  2. Answer from the facts given. Many questions depend on a detail in the scenario, so check back before you choose.
  3. Think like a professional driver. The safest, legal option is usually the one the question is looking for.
  4. Watch the clock. 75 minutes for 50 questions is about a minute and a half each, including reading time.

Tip: our case studies are built around everyday work situations such as drivers' hours, securing loads and looking after passengers. Revising those topics helps with both part 1 and part 2.

Where part 2 fits in the Driver CPC

The Driver CPC initial qualification has five tests:

  1. Part 1: theory, for lorry or bus and coach drivers
  2. Part 2: case studies
  3. Part 3a: off-road exercises
  4. Part 3b: on-road driving
  5. Part 4: practical demonstration

Once you pass part 2, your pass letter is valid for 2 years, and you need to pass the part 4 practical test in that time. If you're taking all the tests, you can book part 2 online as soon as you have your provisional licence. Drivers with acquired rights who only need parts 2 and 4 book by phone.

What to revise

The case studies draw on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and the official DVSA guide for goods vehicles or for buses and coaches. Mix our case study practice with topic quizzes from the lorry or bus theory test pages, and take a full mock in one sitting before you book.
