The car theory test (category B) is one sitting with two parts, and you must pass both on the same day.
| Part | What you do | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice | 50 questions, 3 of them about a short silent video | 57 minutes | 43 out of 50 |
| Hazard perception | 14 clips with 15 developing hazards | About 20 minutes | 44 out of 75 |
You can flag questions and go back to change answers, and you get a break of up to 3 minutes before hazard perception. If you fail either part, you retake the whole test. Check the details in our guides to the theory test pass mark and how long the theory test is.

Free car mock tests
When you're ready for exam conditions, take a random mock theory test: 50 questions drawn from every topic, a 57-minute timer and a pass mark of 43. Prefer a fixed set you can retake and compare? Try mock test 1, mock test 2, mock test 3, mock test 4 or mock test 5.
Don't forget hazard perception
Hazard perception is half of your theory test, and it's the part many learners practise least. Our free hazard perception test runs 14 original animated clips with the same scoring as the real test: up to 5 points per hazard and 44 out of 75 to pass. Clicking constantly or in a pattern scores zero, just like on the day, so read our hazard perception tips to time your clicks well.
2026 update: CPR and defibrillator questions
From 2026, car theory tests include new questions on CPR and, for the first time, on defibrillators (AEDs). Practise them in Incidents, accidents and emergencies.
Booking your car theory test
You can take the car theory test from age 17, or from 16 if you get the higher rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). You need a provisional driving licence to book, the test costs £23 and you can book your theory test on GOV.UK. On the day, bring your photocard provisional licence. See what to bring to your theory test.
