About MockTheory

MockTheory is a free website that helps you practise for UK driving theory tests – no sign-up, no paywall and no app to download. We're independent, and every question on the site is written by us from The Highway Code.

Who we are

MockTheory (mocktheory.uk) is an independent UK website, not linked to any driving school, app or government body. We built it because we thought good theory test practice should be free, quick to start and easy to use on a phone. You shouldn't have to create an account or hand over an email address just to see how you're doing.

Our mission

To help every learner and professional driver in the UK walk into their theory test feeling ready. That means:

  • Free and open: every test, quiz and guide is free to use, with no sign-up.
  • Realistic: our mock tests use the same number of questions, time limit and pass mark as the real test for each category.
  • Explained: every answer comes with a short explanation and a reference to The Highway Code, so you learn why, not just what.
  • Mobile first: everything, including hazard perception, works with a tap on your phone.

What you'll find here

How our questions are written

We don't copy the DVSA's official revision questions or clips, or questions from any other revision site or app. Every question on MockTheory is original. We write each one from the rules in The Highway Code and Know your traffic signs, which are published by the government under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Each question follows the same process:

  1. We start from a specific rule or sign and the safe-driving point behind it.
  2. We write a clear question with one correct answer and realistic wrong answers – no trick wording.
  3. We add an explanation and the Highway Code rule number or section it comes from.
  4. We check the question, answer and reference against the current Highway Code before it goes live.

Our hazard perception clips are original animations we draw ourselves. They follow the published rules for how the real test is scored, but they are not DVSA clips.

Editorial standards

  • Accuracy first. Numbers such as stopping distances, speed limits and pass marks are checked against The Highway Code and GOV.UK. If we're not sure of a fact, we leave it out.
  • Kept up to date. We review our questions when The Highway Code or the test format changes. The current Highway Code was last updated on 22 October 2025, and we track upcoming changes such as the new motorcycle video questions from 29 October 2026.
  • Clear sourcing. We cite rule numbers only when we're sure of them and link to official sources wherever we can.
  • Plain English. We write in British English that's easy to read, whatever your reading level.
  • Corrections welcome. If you spot a mistake, please tell us and we'll check and fix it quickly.

How the site is funded

MockTheory is free because it's supported by advertising, provided by Google AdSense. Adverts never affect our questions or answers. You can read how we handle data in our privacy policy and cookie policy.

Not official. MockTheory is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) in Northern Ireland or GOV.UK. Our questions are original practice questions based on The Highway Code, not the real test questions. Always book your test through GOV.UK. See our full disclaimer.
