ADI part 1 format

ADI part 1 is the theory test for people training to become an approved driving instructor (ADI). It has two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.

  • 85to pass
  • 57/75hazard perception

The band rule catches people out. You could score 88 overall and still fail if one band comes in under 20. Practise every band, not just your favourites.

The 4 ADI part 1 bands

The multiple-choice questions are split evenly into four bands. Practise each one on its own:

Free ADI part 1 mock test

Our ADI part 1 mock test gives you 100 questions across all four bands, a 90-minute timer and the real pass rules: 85 overall and at least 20 in each band. Your results show your score for every band, so you can see straight away which one needs work.

ADI hazard perception

The ADI hazard perception test uses 14 clips, each with at least one developing hazard and one with two. You score up to 5 points per hazard, but the pass mark is 57 out of 75, much higher than the 44 learners need. Train with our free hazard perception test and aim well above 57, and read our hazard perception tips on timing your clicks.

Booking, cost and retakes

  • ADI part 1 costs £81.
  • If you fail, you must wait at least 3 working days before taking it again.
  • Your pass certificate number lasts 2 years. You need to qualify as an ADI in that time, or you'll have to start the application again.

How to practise for ADI part 1

  1. Know The Highway Code inside out. Road procedure and traffic signs make up half the test, and as an instructor you'll be teaching them.
  2. Practise band by band. Aim for at least 22 out of 25 in each band before moving on.
  3. Take full mocks. Sit the 100-question mock in one go to build your stamina.
  4. Don't neglect hazard perception. The higher pass mark means good learner-level scores aren't enough.
