How to get extra time
- Say you have a reading difficulty when you book on GOV.UK. GOV.UK asks you to tell DVSA at booking if you have a reading difficulty, disability or health condition.
- Send proof. You'll be told how to do this when you book. It can be an email, letter or report from:
- a teacher or other educational professional
- a doctor or medical professional
- an occupational therapist
- an online dyslexia screening product
- DVSA decides the best support. If DVSA agrees you need extra support, it will select the best type for you and tell you what to do next.
Other support for reading difficulties
Voiceover through headphones
You can ask to hear the test through headphones, in English or Welsh. You can listen to the questions and possible answers as many times as you need.
Someone to read and record your answers
A member of staff at the test centre can read out all the instructions and questions on screen and record your answers during the multiple-choice part.
Someone to reword the questions
A member of staff can reword questions to make them easier to understand. They can't change the technical language you need to know, but they can change the order of the sentence and other non-technical words. You still answer each question yourself.
Support if you're deaf or hard of hearing
- British Sign Language: you can take the test in BSL, with a BSL video on screen next to the questions and answers.
- BSL interpreter: you can have one with you during the test, with no extra fee.
- Lip speaker: also with no extra fee.
- Hearing loop: you can use a listening aid.
Tell DVSA you need this support when you book.
Other disabilities or health conditions
Contact DVSA to discuss any other disability or health condition before you book. DVSA theory test enquiries: [email protected], telephone 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
If you use a monitoring device for a medical condition, DVSA must approve it when you book. If you didn't mention it, you'll need to cancel and rebook, selecting "Yes" when asked if you need support (GOV.UK: when you arrive).
Already booked without asking for support?
Contact DVSA as early as possible. If you need to move your test to arrange support, you can change it without paying again as long as you give at least 3 full working days' notice (GOV.UK: change your theory test).
Practising at your own pace
MockTheory is free and has no sign-up, so you can practise as slowly as you like:
- Use topic practice on our car theory test pages: there's no timer, and every question has an explanation.
- When you're confident, try the timed mock theory test to get used to the format.
- Practise hazard perception too. It's a video test, so reading isn't involved.
We design our pages to be accessible, with clear text and strong colour contrast. For more study ideas, read our theory test revision tips.
Language support
The voiceover is available in English or Welsh only. The test itself can only be taken in English, Welsh or British Sign Language. See theory test languages for more.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get extra time on the theory test for dyslexia?
Yes. You can ask for more time for the multiple-choice part when you book. You'll need to send DVSA proof of your reading difficulty, such as a letter from a teacher or doctor or an online dyslexia screening result.
How much extra time do you get in the theory test?
GOV.UK doesn't state a fixed amount. DVSA reviews your proof and decides the best support for you.
Can someone read the theory test questions to me?
Yes. If you send proof of a reading difficulty, a member of staff can read out the questions and record your answers. You can also ask for a voiceover through headphones in English or Welsh.
Can I take the theory test in sign language?
Yes. You can take the test in British Sign Language with an on-screen BSL video, or have a BSL interpreter with you at no extra fee.
Does extra support cost more?
GOV.UK says you won't be charged an extra fee for a BSL interpreter or lip speaker, and the test fee itself is the same £23 for cars and motorcycles.
