Failed Your Theory Test? What Happens Next

If you fail your theory test, you must book and take the full test again, even if you passed one of the two parts, and you have to wait at least 3 working days before your next attempt. There's no limit on how many times you can take it, but you pay the fee each time (GOV.UK).
- 3working days to wait
- 2parts to retake
- £23car resit fee
- Nolimit on attempts
First, don't be too hard on yourself. DVSA figures show that fewer than half of car theory tests are passed: the pass rate was 44.8% in 2025/26. Plenty of good drivers needed more than one go.
What happens straight after you fail
You get your result at the test centre. You'll be given a letter that tells you which parts you didn't score enough points on, so you know what to practise. Keep it: it's the most useful revision tool you have.
Understanding your results letter
- Failed the multiple-choice part (under 43 out of 50): your knowledge of the rules needs work. Use the letter to find your weakest topics.
- Failed hazard perception (under 44 out of 75): you may be clicking too late, too early or in a pattern.
- Failed both: plan a full revision cycle before you rebook.
How soon can you retake the theory test?
You have to wait at least 3 working days. When you rebook on GOV.UK, you must choose a date at least 3 working days away. In practice, a short wait is no bad thing: use it to fix the gaps your letter showed up. Rebook at gov.uk/book-theory-test.
Lorry and bus drivers taking the Driver CPC part 1 also have to wait 3 clear working days before a retake. ADI part 1 candidates must choose a date at least 3 working days after their last test.
How many times can you fail your theory test?
There's no limit. You can take it as many times as you need to, but each attempt costs £23 for cars and motorcycles. That's a good reason to get properly ready before you rebook. See theory test cost for all fees.
How to pass next time
If you failed the multiple-choice questions
- Write down the topics your letter mentions.
- Re-read the matching sections of The Highway Code.
- Practise those topics on our car theory test pages and read every explanation.
- Learn the numbers: speed limits, stopping distances and sign meanings. Our road signs test helps here.
- Take full timed mock tests until you're scoring well above 43 every time.
If you failed hazard perception
The most common reasons are clicking too late (low scores) or clicking too much (zero for the clip). Remember how it's scored (GOV.UK: hazard perception):
- You score up to 5 points for each developing hazard. Click as soon as you see it starting to develop.
- A developing hazard is something that would make you change speed or direction, such as a parked car that starts to signal and pull out.
- You don't lose points for a wrong click, but you score nothing if you click continuously or in a pattern.
A safe approach is to click once when you first notice a possible hazard and again as it develops. Practise with our free hazard perception test and read our hazard perception tips.
Common reasons people fail
- Booking before covering all 14 topics.
- Learning answers by heart without understanding the rules.
- Rushing the questions or misreading words such as "not" or "first".
- Not practising hazard perception enough, or clicking in a rhythm.
- Nerves. Doing mock tests under real conditions makes the day feel familiar.
How does failing affect your driving test?
The main effect is on timing. You need the pass certificate number from your theory test to book your practical driving test, so a fail pushes that back. Use the time well: keep practising with your instructor or supervising driver, because real driving experience helps with hazard perception too.
Need extra support?
If reading or a health condition made the test harder, you can ask for support when you rebook, such as extra time or someone to read the questions. See theory test extra time.
