The car theory test: 50 questions

Each question appears on screen with several possible answers, and you select the right one. Before you start you get instructions and a practice question to get used to the screens. You can flag questions to come back to and change any answer at any point (GOV.UK: multiple-choice questions).

You need 43 correct answers to pass. See theory test pass mark for the full breakdown.

Three video questions

Three of the 50 questions are about a short video showing a normal driving situation, such as driving through a town centre or on a country road. The video is silent, and you can watch it as many times as you like during the test. These replaced the old written case study in September 2020.

Where the questions come from

DVSA says the 50 questions are drawn from a bank of over 700, covering everything from road signs and traffic laws to vehicle safety, hazard awareness and first aid (GOV.UK news, 13 August 2025). The bank is organised into 14 topics, and the questions are based on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving – the essential skills. Read our guide to the 14 theory test topics.

The motorcycle theory test: 50 questions

Motorcyclists also get 50 questions in 57 minutes, but the format is changing:

  • Tests before 29 October 2026 include a case study: a short story that 5 questions are based on.
  • Tests on or after 29 October 2026 include 3 questions based on a short, silent video, just like the car test.

Hazard perception: 14 clips, 15 hazards

The hazard perception part isn't made of questions. You watch 14 clips of everyday road scenes and click when you spot a developing hazard. Each clip has at least one developing hazard and one clip has two, so there are 15 to find. Each is worth up to 5 points, giving a maximum of 75 (GOV.UK: hazard perception test).

Try the MockTheory hazard perception test, which uses the same 14-clip format.

Lorry and bus drivers: 100 questions

The Driver CPC part 1a test has 100 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 55 minutes, with a pass mark of 85. The hazard perception test (part 1b) has 19 clips and is booked separately. Practise with our HGV mock test or PCV mock test.

The Driver CPC part 2 test is different again: 7 case studies with 5 to 10 questions each, 50 in total. See our Driver CPC case studies.

Driving instructors: 100 questions in 4 bands

The ADI part 1 test has 100 questions, with 25 in each of these four categories (GOV.UK):

  • road procedure
  • traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
  • driving test, disabilities, and the law
  • publications and instructional techniques

Practise each band on our ADI part 1 pages.

How to practise all 50 questions

The best way to prepare is to copy the real thing. Our free mock theory test gives you 50 questions with a 57-minute timer and a 43 pass mark, then shows your score by topic. If you'd rather focus on one area, use our theory test questions and answers by topic.

MockTheory uses original practice questions based on The Highway Code. Not the real test questions. MockTheory is not affiliated with or endorsed by the DVSA.
