Road and traffic signs: revision notes

You can work out the meaning of most UK road signs from their shape and colour before you even read the symbol. These questions are based on the 'Traffic signs', 'Road markings' and 'Light signals controlling traffic' sections of The Highway Code and the free guide Know your traffic signs.

  • Circles give orders. Red circles mostly tell you what you must not do; blue circles mostly tell you what you must do.
  • Triangles warn of hazards ahead, such as bends, junctions or slippery roads.
  • Rectangles inform. Blue backgrounds are for motorways, green for primary routes, white with a black border for local roads and brown for tourist attractions.
  • Two exceptions: the octagonal STOP sign and the upside-down GIVE WAY triangle have unique shapes.
  • Studs: red on the left edge, amber by the central reservation, white between lanes and green at slip roads and lay-bys (rule 132).

Tip: remember that a speed in a red circle is a maximum, while a speed in a blue circle is a minimum. It's a favourite way to catch people out.
