- 100questions
- 1 hr 55minutes
- 85to pass
- 67/100hazard perception
The lorry theory test is part 1 of the Driver CPC initial qualification. It's split into two tests that you book separately, although you can take them on the same day.
| Part | What you do | Time | Pass mark | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1a: multiple-choice | 100 questions | 1 hr 55 min | 85 out of 100 | £26 |
| 1b: hazard perception | 19 clips, 20 developing hazards | – | 67 out of 100 | £11 |
You must pass both parts within 2 years of each other to get your theory test certificate. If you fail a part, you have to wait at least 3 clear working days before taking it again. Questions are based on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and the official DVSA guide to driving goods vehicles. Read the full rules on GOV.UK.
LGV theory test topics to practise
Our lorry questions are grouped into 14 topics. Practise each one with instant feedback and an explanation for every answer:

|---|---|
| Vehicle weights and dimensions | Heights, widths, weight limits and low bridges |
| Drivers' hours and rest periods | Driving limits, breaks, rest and record keeping |
| Braking systems | Air brakes, endurance brakes and safe braking |
| The driver | Fitness to drive, health and professional attitude |
| Carrying loads | Securing loads, weight distribution and load types |
| The road | Road types, weather and night driving |
| Accidents | What to do at an incident, fires and first aid |
| Vehicle condition | Daily walkaround checks, tyres and faults |
| Leaving the vehicle | Parking safely and getting out of the cab |
| Restricted view | Blind spots, mirrors and manoeuvring |
| Essential documents | Licences, tachograph records and vehicle paperwork |
| Environmental issues | Fuel economy, emissions and noise |
| Other road users | Cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users |

Working towards a C1 licence for smaller lorries? These LGV topics are the right place to start too.
Free HGV mock theory tests
Our HGV mock theory test gives you 100 questions, a 1 hour 55 minute timer and a pass mark of 85. For fixed sets you can retake, try mock test 1 and mock test 2.
Tip: 100 questions is a long test. Take at least one full mock in a single sitting so you know how it feels to concentrate for nearly two hours.
HGV hazard perception (part 1b)
The lorry hazard perception test has 19 clips with 20 developing hazards. Each hazard is worth up to 5 points, and you need 67 out of 100 to pass. You only get one go at each clip, and you can't review or change your responses. Practise with our free HGV hazard perception test, which has the same 19-clip format.
What comes after the theory test?
The Driver CPC initial qualification has five tests in total:
- Part 1: theory (multiple-choice and hazard perception)
- Part 2: case studies
- Part 3a: off-road exercises
- Part 3b: on-road driving
- Part 4: practical demonstration
You might not need all five, for example if you qualified as a lorry driver before and are retraining. Check what applies to you on GOV.UK.
How to practise for the lorry theory test
- Start with topics that are new to you, such as drivers' hours, braking systems and vehicle weights and dimensions.
- Take a full 100-question mock each week and aim to clear 85 comfortably.
- Mix in hazard perception practice, as part 1b is a separate pass.
